Roy Book Binder is Coming

On Sunday, November 9th, Roy Book Binder, who has been entertaining audiences worldwide since the blues and folk revival of the 1960's, will take the stage at the Waverly Community House ("The Comm") for PocoNotes' fourth and final acoustic music storytelling event of 2008. It's there that he will combine country blues, ragtime, blue grass and folk music in a way that captures the essence of the front-porch bluesman of days gone by.

Roy learned to play from blues legends like Reverend Gary Davis and Pink Anderson and has shared the stage with Bonnie Raitt, Ray Charles, Doc Watson and B.B. King at venues ranging from B.B.'s blues club in Manhattan to MerleFest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina...and everywhere in-between nationally and internationally. However, perhaps Roy's long-time friend, Jorma Kaukonen of The Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, summed it up best when he described Roy as "…a master player, singer, writer and teller of tales."

Opening the show will be a trio from Northeastern Pennsylvania, The Young Geezers, three good friends who consider themselves old enough to be considered "geezers" but too young to admit it. Together, Dan Townsend, Rap Parsons and Tony Kearney enjoy the musical synergy of blending acoustic instruments with three-part harmonies, and credit their full-time employment – as University of Scranton professors and social worker, respectively - with affording them the opportunity to play their music entirely for the pleasure of it. For this event, they will be bringing a special guest of their own, John James of Wayfarers & Company, a popular Stroudsburg musical group, who will join in with his fiddle.

PocoNotes' "Hear 'Em at The Comm" acoustic storytelling events have already filled the Waverly Community House with music on three other occasions…compliments of headliners, Patrick Sweany, Toby Walker and Spencer Bohren and special NEPA guests Billy Rogan, Charles Havira and Pat Flynn with a little help from his friend, John Smith. On each night, the audience was able to experience extremely talented musicians, great storytellers and terrific entertainers who perform all over the world and, for one special evening, were playing in our "neighborhood".

As was true for each of the prior "Hear 'Em at The Comm" events, Roy Book Binder has agreed to host an educational workshop prior to the evening's concert performance. This session, which is limited to eight students, is scheduled from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. for a fee of $100 and will include a "Q&A" session with Roy about a "career" in the blues. Due to the exceptionally small class size, reservations are not only suggested…they are required and can be made by calling (888) 800-POCO.

Tickets for the performance are $20 for advance sales and $25 at the door and are available either at the Waverly Community House at 1115 North Abington Road in Waverly, Duffy Accessories at 218 Linden Street in Scranton or www.PocoNotes.com.
