| CSC Jazz Birds to open season The Chadron State College Jazz Birds will open the 2008-09 season when they start their series of performances at Wrecker's Roadhouse in downtown Chadron on Wednesday Sept. 24. "The band is excited about playing for the people of Chadron. They really love getting out and playing, " said Dr. Sandy Schaefer, the group's leader. The group will perform its unique blend of soul jazz, funk and Motown. Singer-trombonist, Chris Van Dyke of Benkelman, returns this year to lend his talent to the band along with two new freshmen, Alex Keller of Chadron and Jessica Van Cleeve of Rapid City. The Birds have two new arrangements for the first engagement: "The Jody Grind, " made famous by Horace Silver and "Choo Choo Ch-Boogie" by Louis Jordan. Schaefer said, "I have been wanting to add some of those great Louis Jordan tunes to the band's repertoire ever since the beginning. Louis Jordan was so popular that in 1946, nine of the top 15 songs on the Rhythm and Blues charts were his." write your comments about the article :: © 2008 Jazz News :: home page |
