Among the jazz luminaries expected to attend this year are Cecil Bridgewater, trumpet; Leon Ndugu Chancler, drums; Antonio Hart, alto saxophone; Mike Mossman, trumpet; and Patrice Rushen, piano. Additional artists will be announced in the near future. The musicians will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Nov. 1 in Carnegie Music Hall, 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland, under the direction of Leon Dorsey, bass player, Pitt assistant professor of jazz studies, and coordinator of Pitt's Jazz Studies Program. During Jazz Week, the musicians will conduct free lecture/demonstrations on campus and additional lectures will be offered on the business of jazz and jazz history. The musicians also will provide miniclinics at area schools and visit other community locations. Concert tickets are $18 and will be available for purchase by the middle of next week at any TicketMaster location, by phone at 412-323-1919, online at ticketmaster.com, and at the William Pitt Union (WPU) box office, 3959 Fifth Ave., Oakland. Founded by Nathan Davis, director of Pitt's Jazz Studies Program, the Pitt Jazz Seminar and Concert was the first academic jazz seminar in the country to feature international artists connecting with aspiring student musicians in a lecture format, then performing together as an ensemble. Additional details, including seminar schedules and background information on the performers, will be available in the coming weeks. write your comments about the article :: © 2008 Jazz News :: home page |
