ECM Events in Athens, Frankfurt & Barcelona

Major ECM live events are announced for autumn: festivals in Athens and Frankfurt, and – another first - the start of a long series of concerts in Barcelona.

The Ymittos Festival will host concerts from September 5 to 13, with a rich programme of artists and ensembles and a focus on Mediterranean culture. The open-air festival in the atmospheric context of the Theatro Vrachon in Athens is launched on September 5 with the Anouar Brahem Trio and Savina Yannatou & Primavera En Salonico (new album: "Songs of an Other") . On September 6, the programme features Gianluigi Trovesi & Gianni Coscia, and pianist François Couturier's "Nostalghia – Song for Tarkovsky", with Anja Lechner (violoncello), Jean-Marc Larché (soprano sax) and Jean-Louis Matinier (accordion).

On September 7, Vassilis Tsabropoulos and Anja Lechner now joined by drummer U.T. Gandhi present their new "Melos" project, in which Tsabropoulos's music, inspired by Byzantine hymns, forms an arc embracing also compositions of Gurdjieff. The second part of the evening's double bill comprises "Re: Pasolini", Stefano Battaglia's programme honouring his countryman Pier Paolo Pasolini. On September 8, a solo set by another outstanding Italian pianist, Stefano Bollani, is followed by a performance by the Tomasz Stanko Quartet to conclude the first block of concerts.

Then, on 12 and 13 September, the grand finale of the first ECM festival in Athens: the world première of Eleni Karaindrou's music for Theo Angelopoulos's new film "The Dust of Time", with Maria Farantouri singing, and Alexander Myrat directing the Megaron Orchestra Camerata of the Friends of Music, plus traditional ensemble and jazz quartet . "Spuren1" [Traces], the first edition of the new ECM Festival in Frankfurt, co-launched by the Alte Oper and ECM Records, takes place from September 17 to 19. The festival seeks to explore the relations and interactions between music and other artistic disciplines. The first edition "Spuren 1 - Music and Film" looks at a selection of the burgeoning number of film related projects on ECM and at the variety of dialogues possible between the media. On September 17, François Couturier inaugurates "Spuren1" with his "Nostalghia – Song for Tarkovsky" programme. This homage to the Russian director is echoed, on 19 September, by Stefano Battaglia's tribute to Italian filmmaker Pasolini.

On September 18, the music of Eleni Karaindrou is presented, and the Megaron Camerata underAlexander Myrat joined by soloists Kim Kashkashian (viola), Jan Garbarek (saxophones) and Vassilis Christopoulos (oboe). A "Music for Films" shaped for Frankfurt will consisting titles composed by Eleni Karaindrou for several filmmakers, above all for Theo Angelopoulos.

On the days preceding and following the concerts, films of Angelopoulos, Pasolini and Tarkovsky will be screened at the Deutsches Filminstitut, official partner of "Spuren1". For more detailed information: www.alteoper.de.

On to Spain and the ECM Barcelona L'AUDITORI series. Three organizations - L'Auditori, Zero4 Live Cultural Events and ECM - have collaborated to instigate a series of concerts to be developed over the next few years. The first series (season 2008/2009) has a strong jazz focus . It begins on September 28 with a double-bill of the Bobo Stenson Trio and the Norma Winstone Trio. To follow, programmed within the Barcelona Jazz Festival, the Tomasz Stanko Quartet on October 26 and the duo of Dino Saluzzi/Anja Lechner on November 10.

On February 4, 2009 Barcelona presents the new international edition of the Enrico Rava Quintet – with Mark Turner, Stefano Bollani, Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard - playing music from the forthcoming "New York Days" album. On March 16 Alexei Lubimov's trio with Alexander Trostiansky (violin) and Kyrill Rybakov (clarinet), plays music of Arvo Pärt, Valentin Silvestrov and Galina Ustvolskaya. And on April 28 the first ECM-BCN series is concluded with an improvisational concert and an unorthodox trio with two pianists -Marilyn Crispell and Agustí Fernández – and bassist Barry Guy.
