| The Government of Canada Supports Jazz Winnipeg Residents and visitors to Winnipeg will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of jazz performances and expand their appreciation of music, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada. Steven Fletcher, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and Member of Parliament (Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia), on behalf of the Honourable Josee Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages and Minister for La Francophonie, today announced funding for Jazz Winnipeg. The $70, 000 in funding will help this organization feature Canadian and international artists at the 2008 Groove-FM Jazz Winnipeg Festival, which takes place from June 20 to 29. Funding will also support Jazz Winnipeg's fall and winter programming and its youth outreach program, which foster a better understanding of jazz through interactive presentations, workshops, and a series of concerts for local audiences held throughout the year. "Our Government is committed to providing the people of Manitoba with opportunities to experience the arts in all forms, " said Minister Verner. "The Government of Canada is proud to support the Jazz Winnipeg Festival, which consistently delivers quality programming and meaningful outreach activities." "The Jazz Winnipeg Festival has always set out to enrich its audiences with diverse and varied artistic experiences, " said Mr. Fletcher. "This investment will enable the festival to flourish in the community, to the benefit of the arts, artists, and the local economy." "Jazz Winnipeg's board and staff are grateful to the Department of Canadian Heritage for its ongoing support and generosity, " said Paul Nolin, Executive Producer of Jazz Winnipeg. "Without this support, we would not be able to deliver one of the greatest music festivals in Winnipeg or deliver the Youth Outreach and the fall-winter programs we are so proud of." The Government of Canada has provided this funding through the Arts Presentation Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
