Detroit Orchestra Announces Jazz Series

Dave Brubeck: Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 8 p.m. Regarded as a genius in his field, the pianist, composer and bandleader wrote such jazz standards as "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "The Duke." Bruebeck was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2007 he was honored with a BBC Jazz "Lifetime Achievement Award."

EARL KLUGH: Friday, November 7, 2008 at 8 p.m.

A pioneer of contemporary jazz, his signature performance and composition styles have earned him 11 Grammy Award nominations over his 30-year career. In his gifted hands, melody, improvisation, moving bass lines and inner voices combine seamlessly to create a symphony of sound.

Ring in the New Year with an exciting jazz double-bill featuring Phil Woods and Sophie Milman. One of the true masters of the alto saxophone, Phil Woods has been topping the charts since the mid-1950s and is known for his searing tones, driving rhythms and magnetic improvisations that grab audiences by the throat and never let go. Award-winning jazz vocalist and pianist Milman burst onto the jazz scene in 2004 with her self-titled debut which has sold over 100, 000 copies worldwide.

JOHN SCOFIELD: Friday, February 20, 2009 at 8 p.m.

John Scofield considered one of the "Big Three" of current jazz guitarists (along with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell), began his career in the late 1970s and remains as popular today as ever. Possessor of a distinctive sound and stylistic diversity, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music falls somewhere between post-bop, funk-edged jazz and R&B.

BLUE NOTE 70th ANNIVERSARY: Friday, March 13, 2009 at 8 p.m.

Blue Note Records, the country's premier jazz label, turns 70 in 2009. To celebrate this monumental occasion, Blue Note artist and pianist Bill Charlap leads an all-star band of today's preeminent jazz musicians in performances of classic tunes from the label's rich catalogue. Renowned for her dynamic live shows and her recordings with Blue Note Records, Detroit native Dianne Reeves is the winner of four Grammy Awards, most recently for her performance on the motion picture soundtrack for Good Night and Good Luck in 2006. Her style has no boundaries, drawing from African, Brazilian, Caribbean, gospel and R&B, creating a timeless and magical musical experience.

MINGUS DYNASTY BAND: Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 8 p.m.

Charlie Mingus was a virtuoso bassist and an accomplished pianist, bandleader and composer. Always at the forefront of the avant-garde, his unique and personal style made him one of the leaders in contemporary jazz.
