| Sydney Opera Presents Caroline Nin: Marlene Following on from her extended sold-out Sydney show, Hymne a Piaf, French songbird Caroline Nin returns to The Studio to tell the story of her idol in song. Cabaret's leading light is back with the impassioned and true stories of Marlene Dietrich in Nazi-occupied Paris during World War II. From the 30's to the 50's, Marlene Dietrich was the ultimate symbol of "femme glamour" meets "femme fatale". The extraordinary Caroline Nin uses song, spoken word and video to capture both sides of the Dietrich persona, set against the backdrop of her anti-Nazi campaign during World War II. Her songs became the soundtrack to a world in turmoil, establishing new standards like Lilli Marlene, Where Have All The Flowers Gone and Just A Gigolo on both sides of the front line. Supported by pianist Christopher Culpo and Rosie Westbrook on double bass, Nin draws on Dietrich's life and music to paint a warm, three-dimensional portrait of a passionate and witty woman who became both icon and hero. Born in Paris, Nin is often referred to as the Dietrich of the 21st century, for her sultry and breathlessly devastating performances. Her singing and theatrical presentation pushes both established torch songs and cabaret standards to a different level. Nin started her career in the highly regarded Parisian jazz venue, The Hollywood Savoy interpreting the songs of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan.
