| Unforgettable Jazz At North Devon Theatres The great British trombonist Chris Barber returns to the Queen's Theatre in Barnstaple with his eleven piece jazz band on Saturday 10th May. The popular band leader Chris Barber is one of the most important figures in the UK jazz scene. His band turned professional in 1954 and they have remained one of Europe's most successful traditional jazz bands ever. Their blend of jazz and blues has seen them influence many greats of the music world including The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Van Morrison and Mark Knopfler. Chris himself has been a key player in the music industry having opened the Marquee Club, a hot spot for British rock in the 60s and 70s, and being the co-founder of the National Jazz and Blues Festival in Reading in 1961, which became the Reading Rock Festival. In recognition he was awarded an OBE in 1991 for his services to music. The Big Chris Barber Band will play a wide selection of the music they love, from the sound of New Orleans and the early music of Duke Ellington to the soulful blues of Miles Davies. They combine all these ingredients for an unforgettable evening of fantastic jazz and blues music. - www.northdevontheatres.org.uk write your comments about the article :: © 2008 Jazz News :: home page |
