| Ladies Singing the Blues: The Reunion Standing on the shoulders of Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, Community Works presents Ladies Singing the Blues: The Reunion on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine (1047 Amsterdam Avenue). The reunion brings together the performers who participated in an eight-show year-long performance series. This gala event is a salute to Maxine Brown, Juanita Brooks, Lady Cantrese, Ghanniyya Green, Sandra Reaves-Phillips, LeeOlive Tucker, Baby Washington, and legendary singer and songwriter Rose Marie McCoy, and will commence at 6:00 PM. The evening will open with a dance tribute with students from Harlem's High School for Mathematics, Science & Engineering, followed by the awards presentation to the honorees. Following the salute, Sandra Reaves-Phillips will perform excerpts from her one woman show, The Late Great Ladies of Blues & Jazz. The evening will culminate with a performance featuring all the honorees. Ladies Singing the Blues is part of Community Works' signature exhibition and performance series, harlem is… MUSIC. These performances celebrate the sounds and stories of internationally acclaimed female blues crooners. harlem is… MUSIC: The Spirit of Community will be on exhibition at the Cathedral through May 15, 2008.
