Mallorca – And all that jazz

There's a festival fiesta frenzy taking place in Mallorca this year as the island gears up for a feast of cultural activities. A hip arts and music scene is fast emerging and luxury accommodation-specialists, Mallorca Farmhouses, are keen to show that there's more to Mallorca than just a relaxing beach holiday.

Running from March until December, The Jazz Voyeur Festival offers a series of jazz concerts with performance in the Palma Auditorium and Bellver Castle from the likes of Kenny Barron, Pee Wee Ellis, Porteña Jazz Band, Barbara Hendricks and the Mississippi Mass Gospel. Headlining this year, and provisionally scheduled for 5 August, is the legendary Diana Krall.

Throughout August, the International Sa Pobla Jazz Festival presents a series of free jazz concerts in Palma's main square, whilst the two week-long Alcudia Jazz Festival, at the start of September, offers an array of exciting performances turning the island into a haven for jazz aficionados.

The Opera Season, which runs until November, at the recently reformed Teatre Principal in Palma, promises three large productions - including Madam Butterfly - as well as a concert aimed at children and discussions with the experts and soloists.

When it comes to the arts, Mallorca has a real creative buzz. Home to over 30 independent art galleries, it has more art galleries per capita than any other European city. Palma's artistic vibe culminates at the annual Nit de Art, which takes place on the third Thursday in September, as visitors flock to the art galleries, cultural centres and museums which all stay open until late in the evening offering an incredible experience for young and old alike.

Visiting Mallorca has never been easier with many of the low-cost airlines flying daily into Palma. Mallorca Farmhouses offers a vast range of accommodation with something to suit every taste from apartments to modern villas and rustic farmhouses. San Pere, a one-bedroom apartment in the centre of Palma, starts from £299 for three nights and includes maid service, welcome hamper and complimentary car hire.
