Moonshine, the new album from trumpeter/composer Dave Douglas' Grammy-nominated band, Keystone, is one of those albums that move musical genres forward into uncharted territory. In this case, the genre is electronica, funk and jazz, the sound of late 1960s Miles Davis, Weather Report, and Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. The evolutionary/revolutionary aspect is found in the vibrant alchemy between Douglas' avant-garde leaning compositions, the relentless, polyrhythmic funk of drummer Gene Lake and bassist Brad Jones, the Sun-Ra-esque sonics of Adam Benjamin who plays a highly modulated Fender Rhodes and the blowing of the front line featuring Douglas and, much in demand, saxophonist Marcus Strickland
But what puts this one over the top is the true integration of a DJ, in this case DJ Olive, into the constantly shifting improvisations of a cutting edge band. On Moonshine, a DJ, for the first time on record, becomes a percussionist, albeit one armed with a great record store's set of sounds, textures and beats. Rolling Stone called Keystone's 2005's self titled album, which was inspired by the 1920s era film actor and director Roscoe “Fatty" Arbuckle, “a modernist requiem." Moonshine takes it a step further: a modernist recipe for the future sound of electronica, funk and jazz.

More on Dave Douglas: Twice Grammy-nominated trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas is arguably one of the most original jazz musicians of his generation. From his New York base, where he has lived since the mid 1980s, he has earned lavish national and international critical acclaim, including trumpeter, composer, and jazz “Artist of the Year" by such organizations as the New York Jazz Awards, Down Beat, Jazz Times, Jazziz, and the Italian Jazz Critics' Society. His solo recording career began in 1993 with Parallel Worlds on the Soul Note label. He has since released twenty-five recordings of original music. In 2005, after seven critically-acclaimed albums for the Bluebird/RCA label, he launched his own label, Greenleaf Music.

Besides leading his own groups, Douglas has an important ongoing musical relationship as a member of John Zorn's Masada. He is also a member of the SF Jazz Collective. Additional collaborations have included artists such as Trisha Brown, Myra Melford, Anthony Braxton, Don Byron, Joe Lovano, Uri Caine, Cibo Matto, Susie Ibarra, Sean Lennon, Fred Hersch, Mark Dresser, Han Bennink, Misha Mengelberg, and Horace Silver.

Douglas is currently the artistic director of the Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Center. He is also a founding member and the director of the New York-based Festival of New Trumpet Music. Additionally, Douglas has received composition fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Meet the Composer, the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, Arts International, the Vooruit Culture Center, Extension Ensemble and the Library of Congress.
