Herbie Hancock Wins Two Grammy Awards

Genre-stretching musician Herbie Hancock has been honored by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences with Grammy Award for Album of the Year and Best Contemporary Jazz Album for 'River: The Joni Letters', released by Verve Records. 'River' Is Only Second Jazz Album To Win Top Honor. These are Hancock's 11th and 12th Grammys, and represent the first time a jazz record has won Album of the Year since 1964's 'Getz/Gilberto'. He has previously won as a composer and arranger and as a performer in both the Jazz and R&B categories.

Hancock accepted the Album of the Year Grammy by thanking Joni Mitchell and saying, "I'd like to thank the Academy for courageously breaking the mold this time, and in doing so, honoring the giants upon whose shoulders I stand... This is a new day that proves that the impossible can be made possible." He also performed on the Grammy telecast with classical pianist Lang Lang in a two-piano arrangement (with the Grammy orchestra, conducted by John Mauceri) of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue."
