| 35th International Association for Jazz Education Conference The International Association for Jazz Education holds their 35th Annual International Conference in Toronto next week from Jan. 9-12, and features a host of headline concerts, workshops and clinics. Over one hundred jazz concerts will take place over the four days and will feature such names as Kurt Elling, Barry Romberg, Paquito D'Rivera, Tierney Sutton, Kenny Werner and more. Numerous workshops are slated to take place during the event, covering such topics as jazz history, composition and arranging, vocal jazz, instrumental performance and pedagogy, and keyboards. There will also be sessions for strings, jazz combo, woodwinds, teacher training, technology and more. The 8th Annual Gala opens the conference on Wednesday, Jan 9th, where during the evening's events honourees Senator Tommy Banks and Paquito D'Rivera will receive IAJE President's Awards. Grammy Award winning vocalist Nancy Wilson will host the event. During Friday's NEA Jazz Masters concert and panel, the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowships will be bestowed upon this year's outstanding artists. Recipients this year include renowned pianist and composer Andrew Hill, (who was notified of his receipt of the award shortly before his recent death), Candido Camero (rhythm instrumentalist), Quincy Jones (bandleader, composer and musician), Tom McIntosh. Recipient for this year's A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Master Award for Jazz Advocacy is Gunther Schuller.
