| Terri Lynn Carrington at the Iridium Jazz Club Terri Lynn Carrington and The Berklee Jazz Ensemble will perform at the Iridium Jazz Club on Dec. 6. Terri Lyne Carrington Berklee Ensemble - David Negrete - alto, Nick sweet - trombone, Kyle Nasser - tenor, Roy Guzman - guitar, Takeshi Ohbayashi - piano, Dan Carpel - bass, and Mark Whitfield, Jr. - drums. The Terri Lyne Carrington Berklee Ensemble has been one of the most sought after ensemble classes at Berklee College of Music over the last 2 years. After touring and recording for over 20 years with the very best in the jazz world, Terri Lyne decided to turn her talents toward teaching. She has always thought that a musician needs to put themselves in the environment where the competition is the greatest to see how good they are. It is with this in mind that brought about the idea to give the students a real ”New York Jazz” performance experience by having them perform at one of New York's finest jazz clubs. “The bands of Art Blakey and Betty Carter were institutions in themselves,” says Carrington. “It is in this spirit that I try to teach classic and modern jazz repertoire to these young musicians. Freshman drummer, Mark Whitfield Jr. (son of jazz guitarist, Mark Whitfield), is rich in jazz vocabulary and displays maturity far beyond his years. Definitely someone to watch out for...” Selections will include standards, original compositions by Carrington and the students, as well as pieces by some of the legendary artists Carrington has worked with. The group will also perform locally in Boston at the Beehive, November 25, to prepare for the semesters culminating performance in New York. A native of Medford, MA, Carrington developed a reputation as a child prodigy, jamming with Dizzy Gillespie, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Oscar Peterson, and many more. At 11, she received a full scholarship to Berklee, where she played with Kevin Eubanks, Mike Stern, and Branford Marsalis, among others. In 1983 she moved to New York and worked with Stan Getz, Lester Bowie, Pharoah Sanders, Cassandra Wilson, and David Sanborn. Carrington later became the drummer for The Arsenio Hall Show, and the TV show Vibe. She spent seven years on tour with Herbie Hancock and has also toured with Wayne Shorter, Joe Sample, and Al Jarreau. In addition to being an in-demand side player and producer, Carrington has released the albums Jazz Is A Spirit, Structure, and the Grammy- nominated Real Life Story. Carrington has been a professor in the Berklee percussion department since 2005. write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Jazz News :: home page |
