| Westchester Jazz Orchestra: Music of Rollins and Cannonball The Westchester Jazz Orchestra, an all-star ensemble that brings together seventeen musical artists who live, teach or frequently play in the suburbs just north of New York City, will perform newly-commissioned arrangements of the music of Sonny Rollins and Cannonball Adderley on Saturday, December 1, at the Irvington Town Hall Theater, 85 Main Street, Irvington, NY. WJO, which released its debut CD, All In, in September, was recently lauded as “one of the most incredible jazz orchestras in the entire country” by Jazz Improv's New York Jazz Guide. The December 1 concert, the second of WJO's five-concert 2007-08 season, will highlight the enormous contributions of tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins and alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. Rollins' mastery and inventiveness and Adderley's soulful and effusive playing easily bridge many styles of jazz - from hard bop to R&B, calypso to funk. Led by Artistic Director Mike Holober, WJO's roster includes trumpeters Craig Johnson, Tony Kadleck, Jim Rotondi, and Marvin Stamm; saxophonists Jay Brandford, David Brandom, Ralph Lalama, Jason Rigby and Ed Xiques; trombonists Bruce Eidem, Larry Farrell, George Flynn, and Keith O'Quinn; pianist Ted Rosenthal; bassist Harvie S and drummer Andy Watson. In honor of WJO's fifth season, student ticket prices will be only $5 for the entire year. Executive Director Emily Tabin said, “We were thrilled to have many students - and their families - attend our September 29th concert. We hope even more students will attend as the word spreads about our low student price.” On January 26, WJO continues its season with “The Art of Arranging,” pairing contemporary arrangements of well-known big band classics with the more familiar original versions. On April 12, WJO will perform the music of George and Ira Gershwin and Paul Simon, the first recipient of the annual Library of Congress Gershwin Award for popular song, with Kate McGarry as guest vocalist. Finally, on June 7 at the Seven Bridges School in Chappaqua, WJO welcomes summer with the songs of Brazilian master Antonio Carlos Jobim.
