| "Jazz Week in Pittsfield, Massachusetts" Mayor James M. Ruberto has declared the first week of October to be “Jazz Week in Pittsfield,” acknowledging the contributions that the Pittsfield CityJazz Festival has made to downtown revival. His proclamation follows. “Whereas cultural events are powerful change agents in communities. They contribute to economic development by attracting visitors and improving the quality of life in a community, making it more attractive to new businesses and residents. They provide access to the arts to young and old, enriching their lives and inspiring a new generation of performers. And, Whereas the Pittsfield CityJazz Festival was founded in 2005 for all of these reasons and more, to celebrate America's most enduring and unique art form, by providing live performances for all ages, and bringing jazz musicians into our schools to reach thousands of students. And, Whereas jazz is a universal musical language, born in this country. Jazz is America's classical music, our cultural gift to the world. And, Whereas the Pittsfield CityJazz Festival has hosted jazz masters as well as up-and-coming stars, performers of local, regional and national reputation, and is now entering its third year with a more diverse and ambitious program than ever. And Whereas the Pittsfield CityJazz Festival involves the community in many ways, presenting concerts in collaboration with the Women of Color Giving Circle, the Think Pink breast cancer initiative, a Latin Jazz dance night, a concert featuring women in jazz, and local, high school and college musicians. And Whereas the Pittsfield CityJazz Festival nurtures the renaissance of downtown Pittsfield and brings positive attention to the city; and Whereas the Pittsfield CityJazz Festival strengthens the growing role of the arts in establishing Pittsfield as a cultural destination. Therefore, I, James M. Ruberto, Mayor, declare the week of Oct. 1-7, 2007 to be Jazz Week in Pittsfield.
