Great American Blues & Barbeque Festival in San Rafael, CA

The 2nd annual Great American Blues and BBQ Festival will be a Rockn' & Smokin' back to the roots All American musical and gastronomical get down featuring the cream of the Bay Areas Blues Artists and the best barbequers in the Bay Area. Come celebrate Marin's outstanding heritage of great American roots music and its passion for gourmet soul food.

The line up of Blues music will complement the Red sauces of over 10 master barbequers! Pork Ribs, Beef Brisket, Tri Tip and Chicken, it will all be “finger lickin' good”. Headlined by Austin de Lone's 14th Rib Review and featuring blues legends Nick Gravenites, Steve Freund and John Nevin, Saturday September 15th will be a day of “Ribs and Rhythm” on 4th street between Cijos St. and A in Downtown San Rafael. The event will promote awareness and support for Prader-Willi Syndrome research. Admission is Free.

A full day of true Blues is scheduled for the main stage. Marin's own Austin de Lone is a tour de force on keyboards, guitar, and vocals. He has toured frequently with the likes of Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs, Nick Lowe, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and more! His 14th Rib Review will play form 3:30 to 6:00pm and will feature guest Blues legends Nick Gravenites, Steve Freund and John Nevin. These heavy hitters will be backed by house band members; the mighty Mike Schermer of the Elvin Bishop Band on Guitar, Earnest “Boom” Carter on Drums, and Eric McCann on Bass.

The Jackie Payne/Steve Edmondson Band will take the stage from 2:00 to 3:15. Vocalist Jackie and guitarist Steve met years ago while playing together in The Dynatones. Jackie is a true showman who's singing can easily match the fervor and intensity of a fire and brimstone gospel revival. Steve's guitar style is most often compared to either BB King, former T-Birds guitarist Jimmie Vaughan, or Ronnie Earl but he is just as comfortable in the West Coast via Texas styles of T-Bone Walker, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, and Albert Collins.

From 12:30 to 2:00 catch Mississippi Delta Blues man Johnny Rawls with his Bay Area Blues Defenders. Johnny is the real deal. He has appeared on the cover of the April 2002 Living Blues Magazine and has been nominated four times for the W.C. Handy Award. His most recent award came from the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame for R&B Male Vocalist of the Year 2006.

Warming up the stage at 11:30 will be Marin teenage Blues wonders “Side Show Bob”, lead by teacher Chris Detrick, proof that The Blues will never die.

BBQ: Fine Micro brews will be on hand to whet the appetite for the best and varied BBQ fare. There will be over ten BBQ vendors who will all compete for the “King of the Que Awards”. 1st, 2nd and 3rd places will be awarded for Best Brisket, Best Ribs and Best Overall Taste. Judges named so far include Leslie Harlib, food critic at the Marin IJ, Bill Schwartz of Schwartz Sausages, Charlie Woods and DJ's from both KFOG and KOIT! While all the contestants' food will be worth tasting, Rudy Mason of Falling Off the Bone BBQ will be donating the proceeds from his sales to the Tim Mason Scholarship Fund in honor of his son who was killed in 1997. Rudy has been doing BBQ educational fundraisers for a few years and hopes to help another worthy Tracy High School student go to college next year!

Market Place: A Musician's Market Place will have all the latest and vintage greatest in instruments and recording technology. Check out vintage vinyl and rare music collectables then buy some Barbeque sauce form Jakes or All Star dips so you can make some music and mess at home! If you love BBQ and soulful music, the Great American Blues and BBQ Festival is where you want to be Saturday September 15th in San Rafael. Get your Bibs out!
