"This Way" from Brian Chahley

”This Way” is a new release from young up-and-coming trumpeter Brian Chahley (20) from Toronto, Canada. After spending two years as a fellow at the prestigious Brubeck Institute in California playing alongside some of the world's finest young talent and studying under some of the biggest names in jazz, Brian brought a mix of other Brubeck Fellows (past and present) to Toronto in January of 2007 to record this album.

Featured on the album alongside Brian are Lucas Pino on tenor sax, Glenn Zaleski on piano, Chris Smith on bass and Colin Stranahan on drums. Colin has just begun a two year fellowship at the Monk Institute in New Orleans, while Lucas and Glenn recently continued their education at the New School in New York City. Chris is still at the Brubeck Institute, while Brian (a graduate of the fellowship program) is continuing to perform with the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet while also holding an administrative position at the Institute.

The songs on this album are all original compositions by members of the band, which was formed in the summer of 2006 around a European tour and continues to perform all over the continent. These are some of the hottest young talents in jazz - at the time of the recording, not one member of the band was over the age of twenty!

Brian started playing trumpet at the age of 12, and took up jazz soon after. Since then he has studied and performed with Dave Brubeck, Christian McBride, Freddie Hubbard, Lewis Nash, Benny Golson, Nicholas Payton, Clark Terry, Kurt Elling, and many others. He was the first international member of the famed Gibson/Baldwin GRAMMY Jazz Ensembles AND the first trumpet player in the band to sit in the “jazz chair” two years in a row. Brian has performed as a guest artist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and at multiple jazz festivals all over Canada, the United States, and Europe.
