Michael Mantler wins City of Vienna Prize

Trumpeter and composer Michael Mantler has been announced as the winner of the Music Prize of the City of Vienna (Preis der Stadt Wien) for 2007. This is a major award with a long history, and previous recipients have included Josef Matthias Hauer, Ernst Krenek, Friedrich Cerha, György Ligeti, Michael Gielen, Beat Furrer, Olga Neuwirth and other modern composers. The award ceremony takes place in the Wappensaal of Vienna's Town Hall on October 24th.

This is the second major Austrian prize collected by Mantler in recent seasons. In 2004, he won the Austrian State Prize for Improvised Music.

Mr Mantler's most recent ECM release is the anthology "Review". Further recordings are in preparation.

Michael Mantler appears at this year's JazzFest Berlin on November 2nd, with new music played by the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin under the direction of Roland Kluttig, and a distinguished cast of soloists: Roswell Rudd on trombone, Pink Floyd's Nick Mason on drums, Pedro Carneiro (recently heard with Erkki-Sven Tüür) on marimba and vibraphone, Majella Stockhausen- Riegelbauer on piano, Bob Rockwell on tenor sax, Bjarne Roupé on guitar, and the composer himself on trumpet.
