Max Roach Tribute

The Leawood Arts Council, Town & Country Bank & City Light Entertainment have collaborated again this year to host a Jazz Concert Series on Sunday evenings. Each concert is held at the Ironwoods Amphitheater in Ironwoods Park at 14701 Mission Road. The final concert of this free series will begin at 6:00 pm on September 2nd. In the event of rain the concert will move indoors to the Lodge at Ironwoods Park.

The final concert of the jazz series will feature David Basse and the band OJT plus their special guests Greg Carroll, the Director of the American Jazz Museum and Todd Wilkinson of the Coleman Hawkins Legacy Festival in Topeka. These six seasoned musicians will present their loving tribute to one of the founders of modern jazz Max Roach, who passed away last week at age 83.

Carroll and Wilkinson, no strangers to Kansas City are both new residents and they are well aware of the deep musical heritage this area has to offer. They both have graciously agreed to join Basse in celebrating the life of one of their heroes.

For over twenty years David Basse has been at the forefront of Kansas City Jazz. Basse is an acclaimed singer, musician and songwriter who performs around the country and internationally. He has several recordings available from the City Light record label. He has recorded with many of the jazz greats including, Phil Woods and Larry Bunker. His record label received a Grammy nomination in 2004 for Basse's work with pianist Mike Melvoin. David also hosts the award winning Jazz Scene on Kansas Public Radio heard at 91.5 FM in the Kansas City Area.

Don't miss this opportunity to see David Basse Sunday evening September 2nd. Ironwoods Amphitheater is a perfect venue to enjoy a Labor Day weekend. Some seating is available however we recommend bringing a blanket and/or lawn chairs. Picnics are welcomed but alcohol is not allowed within the park.
