| Jazz with Altitude In between the JVC Jazz Festival in June and the third season of Harlem in the Himalayas in September, the Rubin Museum of Art is presenting two showcase performances under the heading Jazz With Altitude. On July 20 you can hear jazz flutist Jamie Baum team up with pianist Roberta Piket supported by bassist Ratzo Harris. On August 10 Doc Cheatham's grandson Theo Croker (trumpet) and his Quintet make their debut. As is customary at this museum of Himalayan art, both will create new compositions in response to the Himalayan thematic of the art at the Museum; and all performances are conducted without amplification in this 137-seat cherrywood-lined room. Friday, July 20 - Jamie Baum (flutes) + Roberta Piket (piano); Ratzo Harris (bass). Jamie Baum (flutist/composer) and Roberta Piket (pianist/composer) have been performing together and collaborating on various projects for over fifteen years. While most often heard leading their own bands, they bring to the Rubin their unique take on jazz standards and originals after having recently returned from performances in Europe. Baum was nominated in '05 and '06 by the Jazz Journalists Association for “Flutist of the Year”; Piket was hailed “a revelation” by JazzTimes; they will be joined by the virtuosic and ever-inventive bassist, Ratzo Harris in this unusual all-acoustic setting. Friday, August 10 - Theo Croker Quintet: Theo Croker (trumpet), Stantawn Kendrick (tenor sax), Sullivan Fortner (piano), Chris Mees (bass), Kassa Overall (drums). At 21 years old, Theo has already distinguished himself as a vital force in the jazz community. As the grandson of jazz trumpet legend Doc Cheatham, Croker's legacy is profoundly felt when he plays.
