Jason Vieaux Performs music by Pat Metheny

Classical guitarist Jason Vieaux returns to the Maverick on Saturday, July 21 for a concert titled “Woodstock Legends: Homage to Metheny.” The program ranges from the high baroque to 20th Century classics and contemporary jazz.

Jason Vieaux (pronounced “vee-OH”) is expanding the definition of a classical guitarist and changing the face of guitar programming. The second half of his July 21 Maverick program will be devoted to the great jazz guitarist and composer, 16-time Grammy Award winner, and Woodstock legend Pat Metheny. Mr. Vieaux reconfigures Mr. Metheny's music, originally written for a large ensemble, extracting its essence for the 6 strings of a classical guitar.

The first half of the concert will include the Prelude, Fugue and Allegro by J.S. Bach, “Variations on a Theme of Mozart” by Fernando Sor, a sonatina by the Mexican composer Manuel Ponce, and selections by Isaac Albniz.

Mr. Vieaux's ever-growing reputation for putting his expressive gifts and virtuosity at the service of the music earns him an active schedule of solo, chamber, and concerto appearances in this country and abroad. In addition to several appearances at international guitar festivals in the United States, Mexico, and Europe, Mr. Vieaux has recently performed on major series in the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, Cleveland's Severance Hall, Spivey Hall, and New York's 92 St. Y and Merkin Hall.

Mr. Vieaux has eight recordings to his credit and many more planned. His latest release is titled “Images of Metheny.” In 2003, “Sevilla: The Music of Isaac Albniz,” was rated among the Top Ten Classical CDs of 2003 by The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Pat Metheny was born in Kansas City. With the release in 1975 of his first album, “Bright Size Life,” he reinvented the traditional jazz guitar sound for a new generation of players. Throughout his career, Mr. Metheny has continuously redefined the genre by utilizing new technology and constantly working to evolve the improvisational and sonic potential of the instrument. He continues to be one of the brightest stars of the jazz community, dedicating time to both his own projects and those of emerging artists and established veterans alike.

Maverick Concerts, near Woodstock, New York, is the oldest continuous summer chamber music series in America. The Maverick Concert Hall was built by hand in 1916 in the pristine Catskill woodland, and now it is a multi-starred attraction on the National Register of Historic Places. Presenting concerts by nationally and internationally known performers at affordable prices, Maverick continues the vision of Hervey White, founder of the collaborative 101-year-old Maverick Art Colony.

Maverick Concerts, a not-for-profit organization, is supported by The Maverick Endowment Fund, Friends of Maverick, public and private foundations, local businesses, the Towns of Woodstock and Hurley, and by public funds from The New York State Council on The Arts, a state agency. The commissioning and performance of the chamber orchestra version of “Final Alice” is supported by the New York State Music Fund, established by the New York State Attorney General at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.
