| Peter Van Huffel Quintet's Canadian Release The Peter Van Huffel Quintet will be releasing their first CD for the renowned jazz label, Fresh Sound / New Talent in Canada this week. This New York based ensemble has spent the past three years performing around NYC and abroad, and has built a sound as an ensemble that is constantly exiting and unpredictable. The group has one past recording available, a live EP from a concert in NYC in 2005, however this new FSNT release entitled ”Silvester Battlefield” is the quintet's first official release. The CD features an array of Peter's compositions as well as one track by pianist Jesse Stacken. The music is a strong mixture of composition and improvisation, and the band plays with an intense level of interaction that never fades. The Peter Van Huffel Quintet includes guitarist Scott DuBois, pianist Jesse Stacken, bassist Michael Bates, drummer Jeff Davis and Peter on saxophones, each who have proven themselves as some of the most intriguing and exciting musicians on the modern New York jazz scene. Jim MacNie of the Village Voice has referred to the new recording as “one of the more memorable Fresh Sounds discs in a while,” and Steve Smith of Time Out New York calls it “An impressive session from beginning to end, the set proves Van Huffel to be a compelling melodist with a fiery outward-bound streak and a penchant for layering opposed rhythms in quirky, compelling ways...” The Peter Van Huffel Quintet will be performing at the Rex in Toronto on Thursday, June 14th and at L'Absinthe in Montreal on Friday, June 15th. CD's will be available for a discounted price at the release concerts only. Visit website write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Jazz News :: home page |
