Swedish Jazz Showcase at Scandinavia House

Scandinavia House in New York presents two of Sweden's foremost jazz acts - Peter Asplund Quartet and Midaircondo - live in concert on June 13, 2007.
The live jazz showcase is presented in conjunction with the seminar Swedish Jazz Now! and is open to the public and free of charge.

Peter Asplund Quartet is one of Sweden's premier jazz groups. The quartet features Jacob Karlzon on piano, Hans Andersson on bass, Johan Lfkrantz Ramsay on drums, as well as band leader Peter Asplund on trumpet. Asplund has established himself both locally and internationally, playing in small combos as well as big bands in clubs, concert halls and festivals in Sweden, the United States, Canada, England, Germany, Australia, Poland, Switzerland, the former Yugoslavia, and naturally, the rest of Scandinavia. The Peter Asplund Quartet skillfully blends tradition and innovation, new composition and classic repertoire, American and Nordic jazz, intense heat and slow sadness.

Midaircondo is Lisa Nordstrom and Lisen Rylander, an electronic duo that fuses visual performance with improvised electro-acoustic music. The group has developed a unique sound, pushing the limits of modern jazz with a combination of saxophone, flute, vocals, laptops and samplers. With a plethora of instruments and abstract recorded sounds, their jam sessions quickly morph into structured and coherent improvisations. Influenced as much by a stray radio broadcast or a glittering pop melody as by the latest star-studded albums, Midaircondo is a self-contained musical constellation.
