Trumpeter Avishai Cohen At The Jazz Standard

Trumpeter Avishai Cohen will perform at the Jazz Standard. NYC on June 27, Featuring Special Guest Guitarist Lionel Loueke in support of Avishai's new release, After The Big Rain. Originally from Tel Aviv, Israel, Avishai Cohen is one of the great young figures on the international jazz scene today. He has shared the stage with the great Bobby Hutcherson in the San Francisco Jazz Collective; has toured with the critically-acclaimed French-Israeli chanteuse Keren Ann; and has co-led such outstanding ensembles as Third World Love, with Omer Avital, Daniel Freedman and Yonatan Avishai. He also leads a funk-oriented band with bassist Me'shell Ndegeocello and drummer Adam Deitch, and continues to perform extensively with the 3 Cohens, which he formed with his sister Anat and brother Yuval, both gifted reed players.

Alternately moody and joyous, richly atmospheric yet beat-driven, After The Big Rain features Cohen with some of his most esteemed peers: Lionel Loueke on guitar and vocals, Jason Lindner on keyboards and Fender Rhodes, Omer Avital on acoustic bass and Daniel Freedman on drums and percussion. Yosvany Terry plays brilliant chekere (Cuban percussion) on four tracks. The music is texturally rich, full of heated improvisation, group interplay and the kind of funky, internationalist flavor for which Avishai has become known.
