| Amphis-Baena at Bar4 Amphis-Baena's unique sound returns to Bar4, Brooklyn, on June 4th. Comprised of effected saxophone, guitar, keyboards and drums, Amphis- Baena freely intepretes their original material, rhythmic songs pulled apart with group improvisation. The Amphis-Baena is a mythical two headed serpent. The word derives from the Greek words amphis, meaning “both ways”, and bainein meaning ”to go”. In many ways Amphis-Baena, the music group, embodies both of these concepts; improvisation linked to composition, chaos connected to structure - moving forward, to go (and leave behind). Amphis-Baena is: Brian Scherman (alto saxophone/effects), Dan Venne (guitar), Jon Anderson (keyboard), and Adam Clark (drums) Each musician brings a unique perspective to the band: *Scherman has performed throughout the Northeast, including at such notable venues as The Blue Note, the 55bar, The Knitting Factory and the House of Blues with legendary performers such as John Scofield, Ralph Alessi and Dave Binney. *Venne's instrumental rock band Cougar has been described by The Wire as “a gleaming gem...gloriously precise and urgent,” and has performed throughout the US and abroad from Argentina to Slovenia and the UK. *Anderson performs regularly with Fresh Sound/New Talent recording artist Gian Tornatore. Jon's work on both of Tornatore's records has turned the heads of multiple critics at All About Jazz and Cadence Magazine. Jon is highly sought after in the New York and Brooklyn scenes for both his Jazz playing and Rock sensibilities. *Clark is the founder and leader of Boston Afrobeat Society, an ensemble with a rampantly growing underground following and a position of resident band at Matt Murphy's Pub in Brookline, MA. In 2006, BAS won the Boston Music Award for best world music act. Formed in 2003, The band's debut album “Fleeting” has received critical praise. Since the band's inception they have performed throughout Boston and the NYC area. write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Jazz News :: home page |
