| Raqib Hassan at The Music Workshop in Hyde Park, Mass Raqib Hassan's Interdimensional Science Research Orchestra (Forbes Graham - trumpet, Raqib Hassan - reeds, Michael Shea - piano, Ryan McGuire - bass, Luther Gray - drums ) performs Monday, May 21 as part of the “Music Workshop” series at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge (15 Dana Ave, Hyde Park, MA) Forbes Graham has appeared on over 30 recordings, ranging in style from contemporary classical, metal, and jazz. His compositions are extremely mathematical, highly contrapuntal, vivacious, and invigorating, drawing from the cross-cultural experiences he has lived. His solo trumpet performances explore micro-climates created from deconstructing the trumpet and the utilization of extended techniques. He has performed or recorded with a diverse group of musicians, including Roger Turner, Kayo Dot, The Flying Luttenbachers, Rakalam Moses, Daughters, Jim Hobbs, Erase Errata, Thoughtstreams, and Raqib Hassan. He is currently a member of the Interdimensional Science Research Orchestra and the Full Metal Revolutionary Jazz Ensemble. He can also be found sitting in with the Fully Celebrated Orchestra from time to time. Festival appearances include High Zero, Full Force (curated by John Zorn), and The Wire's Adventures in Modern Music festival. Suntologist Raqib Hassan, who is a Sufi Dervish of the Nimatullahi order, plays a flotilla of double-reed instruments from around the world (in addition to tenor saxophone). He studied music theory and harmony with saxophonist Bill Thomson, further theoretical studies with Archie Shepp and Roland Wiggins. Raqib worked in New York with bass violinist Hakim Jami and percussionist Rashied Ali. Raqib had produced the series of Sun Ra memorial concerts in Boston with his orchestra, the Interdimensional Science Research Orchestra. He is currently producing and has produced his music on his independent label “AUSM Recordings,” AUSM standing for African Universal Sun Music. Michael Shea has been playing piano and composing professionally for two decades. He spent 1975-87 as house pianist at the legendary El Chapultepec Club, backing such great artists as Eddie Harris, Jerome Richardson and Joe Turner. He worked regularly with the Brazilian Band, Bridges, and Denver's premiere salsa group, Conjunto Colores. In 1987 he moved to Boston, where he played with the late blues singer Jellybelly, the Artie Shaw Band, and the Either/ Orchestra. Mr. Shea has composed new concert music including “Wyoming,” an orchestral fantasy recorded for MMC Records by the Slovak Radio Orchestra. He writes, records and tours with his own ensemble, the Michael Shea Quartet. Their most recent CD, Last Night While You Slept, is now available. write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Jazz News :: home page |
