ECM at the festivals 2007

A number of international jazz festivals spotlight music on ECM in the weeks and months ahead. Jazz sous les pommiers - Jazz under the apple trees - is the pretty title of the Coutances jazz festival in northern France from May 12th to 19th. It incorporates a number of premieres, including, on May 17th, the first French appearance of Italian clarinetist Gianluigi Trovesi’s trio with Umberto Petrin (piano) and Fulvio Maras (percussion), as heard on the new album “Vaghissimo ritratto”.

Also on the 17th: the new quintet version of Carla Bley’s Lost Chords, now with Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, joining the team of Bley, Steve Swallow, Andy Sheppard and Billy Drummond. And: Louis Sclavis’s “Dans la nuit”, - the quintet with Dominique Pifarély (violin), Vincent Courtois (cello), Jean-Louis Matinier (accordion), François Merville (percussion) performing with a screening of Charles Varnel’s film. On the morning of the 18th there is a press conference addressing the book “Horizons Touched: The Music of ECM” and, headlining the evening performances, Manu Katché’s Neighbourhood band, with Tomasz Stanko, Trygve Seim, Marcin Wasilewski and Slawomir Kurkiewicz. On the 19th Trygve Seim presents his ensemble: with the leader on soprano and tenor saxes, Arve Henriksen (trumpet) Torben Snekkestad (bass sax and contrabass clarinet), Håvard Lund (clarinet, bass clarinet), Embrik Snerte (bassoon, contabassoon), Øyvind Brække (trombone), Lars Andreas Haug (tuba), Kristine Lisedatter Martens (cello), Frode Haltli (accordion, quarter-tone accordion), Per Oddvar Johansen (drums), and Tora Augestad (vocal.) The 19th also features a rare performance by Anour Brahem’s Thimar trio in which the Tunisian oud master is joined by John Surman on soprano sax and bass clarinet and Dave Holland on bass. The crowded bill at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland also includes an ECM focus on July 13th, with the Christian Wallumrød Ensemble (quartet version with Arve Henriksen, Nils Øklund and Per Oddvar Johansen), Stefano Bollani, the Enrico Rava Quintet and the Tomasz Stanko Quartet. Italian pianist Stefano Bollani is artistic director of the Vivere Jazz Festival in Florence (June 28th to July 1st) and has this year invited a number of musicians associated with ECM to the event. They include the Jan Garbarek Group, Stefano Battaglia with his Pasolini project ‘Unitas Multiplex’ (featuring trumpeter Michael Gassmann, clarinettist Mirco Mariottini, cellist Aya Shimura, bassist Salvatore Maiore, and drummer Roberto Dani), Misha Alperin playing solo piano, the Tomasz Stanko Quartet, the Enrico Rava Quintet, and John Surman playing with the Orchestra della Toscana. Bollani himself will make a guest appearance with the Gianluigi Trovesi Ottetto. More details about the Vivere festival - which also plans a cover exhibition, talks, and ECM related films - in the near future.
