| Mark Sherman at Sweet Rhythm Mark Sherman will play at Sweet Rhythm, New York on Thursday May 10th with Joe Magnarelli-Trumpet/Fluegelhorn; Allen Farnham-Piano; Dean Johnson-Bass; Tim Horner-Drums. Just back from a 10-day tour of Italy and on the heels of his 2006 release One Step Closer, veteran-vibraphonist Mark Sherman reconvenes his band mates for his new CD Family First, another high-energy session packed with memorable song forms and great blowing from this all-star group. Of One Step Closer, saxophone great Joe Lovano wrote: “I was really happy to be a part of this session with some of New York's most inspired and swinging musicians on today's scene ... The music came alive from beat one and truly speaks for itself!” Regarding Mark's talent, vibist Joe Locke wrote: “I hear the voices of Bags and Bill Evans and Trane and McCoy, and so many, many more, all expressed through the medium of his mallets. As a fellow vibraphonist, I can only be grateful that Mark is around to offer his beautiful and very personal take on this profound tradition.” Perhaps one could say that E.J. Iannelli of All About Jazz was sounding a little prophetic when he wrote: “A follow-up with the same lineup would be something to watch for.” Indeed, Family First further reveals him as a great vibist, composer, and band leader-- enriching the cutting edge of jazz. Look for Mark and band on the road in early 2007. write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Jazz News :: home page |
