| Candid Records Announce Reissues by Jazz Greats London based label, Candid Records are to re-issue five CDs of sessions made in the 1990s by jazz giants The Lighthouse All Stars, Hilton Ruiz, Gary Bartz, Kenny Barron, Donald Harrison & Dr John. Due for UK release on 7th May 2007, these five titles, long out of print were star items in the “rescue and recovery” operation mounted by producer Alan Bates after locating and acquiring the catalogue of the original Candid releases made in 1960/61. The label had lain dormant for thirty years until its resurrection and these releases made around 1990 were instrumental in re-establishing the label as a going concern. Sadly most of the Lighthouse All Stars have passed on, as has the unfortunate Hilton Ruiz. Happily though, Gary, Kenny, Donald and Dr John are still with us and still very active. Reissues: Gary Bartz: There Goes The Neighborhood. Highly energized performance recorded live at Birdland New York in 1990 by legendary saxophonist Gary Bartz who continues to be one of the most articulate and arresting voices in the jazz field. Features Kenny Barron on piano, Ray Drummond on bass and Ben Riley on drums. Kenny Barron: Lemuria Seascape. This collection recorded by Rudy van Gelder finds pianist, Kenny Barron in a trio format with Ray Drummond on bass and Ben Riley on drums.Possibly more than any of his other albums,this one reveals that Kenny Barron has richly fulfilled the promise that excited us in his earliest works three decades ago. Highlights are Blue Mitchell's 'Fungii Mama' and Kenny's original blues 'Slow Grind'. Lighthouse All Stars: America The Beautiful. One of two CDs, this set features a veritable who's who of Los Angeles jazz under the co leadership of Shorty Rogers and Bud Shank. Most of the tunes are composed and arranged by the iconic Shorty himself with outstanding solos by the two leaders as well as Conte Candoli (trumpet), Bill Perkins (baritone, tenor and soprano saxophone), Bob Cooper (tenor saxophone) and piano man Pete Jolly. A true collectors item. Donald Harrison & Dr John: Indian Blues. 'Indian Blues' distills one of the world's greatest musical experiences: The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. With a bit of contemporary bebop from the jazz tent, a smidgeon of New Orleans R&B from one of the big stages, and a dollop of raucous rattle of Mardi Gras Indians from a smaller stage. Donald Harrison wraps it all up in one package and tosses it at you, like some shiny dubloon from a Mardi Gras float. Sidemen on this session include Cyrus Chestnut (piano, background vocals) and Carl Allen (drums,backing vocals). Hilton Ruiz: Live at Birdland. Hilton Ruiz, whose life ended in tragic circumstances in New Orleans in 2006 was an amazingly talented and popular artist and a master of many styles. When it came to caressing the ivories, Ruiz had the class of Erroll Garner and Noro Morales with the sophistication of Duke Ellington and Ernesto Lecuona all wrapped up into one.
