Manhattan School of Music Jazz Philharmonic performs with Lovano

The Manhattan School of Music Jazz Philharmonic conducted by Justin DiCioccio, and joined by saxophonist Joe Lovano as guest artist, performs on Friday, March 30 in the School's John C. Borden Auditorium. The program features the “Expedition Suite,” an eight-movement work featuring compositions by Joe Lovano, Charles Mingus and Michael Abene, all arranged for symphonic orchestra with jazz band by Michael Abene.

The composition was written for the WDR Big Band of Cologne, Germany, and the WDR Rundfunk Ochestra (a full symphony orchestra). Mr. Abene, on faculty at Manhattan School of Music, is the director of the WDR Big Band and conducted the work in its world premiere that took place in November 2005 in Germany.

Michael Abene states, “The compositions, except for my original 'Cubelero ala Reunaldo' and Charles Mingus's 'Duke Ellington's Sound of Love' are all by Joe Lovano and have been recorded with various small groups whose personnel has included Elvin Jones, John Scofield, Hank Jones, Dave Liebman, Michael Brecker, and Dave Holland, to name a few. It was a wonderful challenge for me to take these compositions and expand them for an 80 piece orchestra, still keeping plenty of space for Joe to improvise.”

The program will also include “Peggy's Tango” by Charles Schiermeyer, a second year master's student at MSM in jazz composition. Mr. Schiermeyer was recently commissioned by The Commission Project to compose a work for big band to be performed by the All-City Jazz Big Band, and in May his work, “Permission” will be premiered at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Allen Room.

The Manhattan School of Music Jazz Philharmonic made its debut at the School conducted by Justin DiCioccio on December 13, 2001. The ensemble brings together musicians from both the School's classical division and jazz department to perform original compositions by both jazz composition majors and jazz faculty, and offers students a unique educational experience that bridges the gap between classical, jazz, popular, show and media music.
