Brubeck Institute Names New Director

A new director for the Brubeck Institute was appointed by University officials, it was announced today. Stephen Anderson, currently dean of Pacific's Conservatory of Music, will take over as the full-time director of the Institute. He was selected from several candidates identified through a national search. Pacific will name an interim dean of the Conservatory and will launch a search for a new dean later this year.

“I am honored and excited to have been asked to become the director of the Brubeck Institute,” Anderson said. “I look forward to working with the Brubecks, the Advisory Board, the new Honorary Board and the University community in advancing the mission of the Institute and the legacy of Dave Brubeck. It is a most exciting challenge.”

In the director's role, Anderson will have day-to-day oversight of the Institute and will be responsible for producing the annual Brubeck Festival and organizing and managing the Fellowship, educational outreach and the Summer Jazz Colony programs. He also will work with Pacific's Special Collections staff to promote the Brubeck Collection.

“Steve Anderson has always been an enthusiastic supporter of the Brubeck Institute while serving as Dean of the Conservatory,” said Phil Gilbertson, Pacific's provost. “Under his leadership as dean, the Brubeck Institute has grown in quality, sharpened its focus, and increased in stature. At this pivotal time of a greatly expanding national profile for the Institute, Steve Anderson is the right person to lead it.”

Anderson came to Pacific in 2000 as dean of the Conservatory. During his tenure, he raised the quality of the Conservatory in performance and professional preparation, expanded programs in music management, jazz studies, and the Brubeck Institute, and strengthened recruitment, equipment, facilities, and outreach initiatives. He also led the Conservatory's successful accreditation process with the National Association of Schools of Music. He served on the Brubeck Institute's Advisory Board since its inception and last year produced the Brubeck Festival, a role he has taken again this year.

The Brubeck Institute was established in 2000 following the donation of an extensive collection of Brubeck's papers to Pacific's library for research and archival purposes. Brubeck, 86, graduated from Pacific in 1942. His wife, Iola Brubeck, graduated from Pacific in 1945.
