| James Falzone's May Concerts in Chicago Clarinetist and composer James Falzone will perform back-to-back Chicago concerts in early May to celebrate the release of his new CD, The Sign And The Thing Signified (Allos Documents). Falzone, a Chicago native, will perform with his seven-piece ensemble, Allos Musica, at the Ossia Performance Space on May 5th and The Hungry Brain (presented by Umbrella Music) on May 6th. Both concerts will feature Amy Cimini (viola), Katherine Young (bassoon), Karen Davis (cello), Krzysztof Pabian (bass), Eric Platz (percussion) and Todd Carter (electronics and laptop). ”The Sign and The Thing Signified is an attempt to synthesize a few of the important elements in my work: composition, improvisation, and an openness to traditions and ways of making music that are not genre specific,” Falzone explains. “There are several through-composed pieces here, as well as solo clarinet improvisations, a few group improvisations, and my version of the aria “When I Am Laid to Rest” (called “Dido's Lament”) from the 17th century Henry Purcell opera, Dido and Aeneas. Many interests come together, and are at work, in my music and I believe a musician is the sum total of all he or she takes in. Like many musicians of my generation, I am very comfortable shifting concepts, but the hope is that my individual voice remains constant regardless of the setting.” Falzone's diverse career exists at the intersection of a multitude of musical styles and traditions. Along with his work as a leader, he performs with groups such as the acclaimed French music ensemble Le Bon Vent, Dutch saxophonist Jorrit Dijkstra's Flatlands Collective, and Klang, featuring fellow Chicagoans Jason Adasiewicz, Jason Roebke and Tim Daisy. He is also the Resident Composer and Director of Music for Grace Chicago Church, and an active freelance composer whose works have been performed by The Rockford Symphony Orchestra, South Bend Symphony Orchestra and The Human Connection New Music Ensemble. Falzone, a graduate of New England Conservatory's innovative Contemporary Improvisation Department, is also an educator and traveling lecturer/clinician who teaches courses in composition and world music at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Jazz News :: home page |
