Spring Into Jazz With Phil Schaap At Swing University

Celebrate spring with the new Swing U term beginning March 19, 2007. Swing University is comprised of 3 courses taught by jazz historian, DJ and curator of Jazz at Lincoln Center, Phil Schaap. The courses explain jazz, its development, and how to be an effective listener. Learn about hard bop, the style that made bebop funky, delve into the music of the great Duke Ellington or become a jazz expert with the Advanced Jazz History class. "I won't teach you trumpet or piano or drums, but I'll teach you the history, the context, the culture, while telling you some good stories, " said Phil Schaap.

All classes take place at the Irene Diamond Education Center in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center (Broadway at 60th Street). Registration is available by calling Subscription Services at (212) 258-9999 or email swingu@jalc.org.

Swing U Spring Classes: HARD BOP: The Style that Made Bebop Funky with Phil Schaap - Mondays, March 19-April 9, 2007. Hard bop combined the virtuosity and harmony of bebop with a more insistent rhythm and soulful character. From Art Blakey to Miles Davis, Phil Schaap examines how hard bop pioneers had their cake and ate it too.

DUKE ELLINGTON with Phil Schaap - Wednesdays, April 4-May 23, 2007.
Duke Ellington expanded the boundaries of jazz with a musical and cultural influence that still stands today. From his early years to the end of his life, immerse yourself in the music and legacy of "The Maestro" with Phil Schaap.

ADVANCED JAZZ HISTORY with Phil Schaap - Tuesdays, April 3-May 8, 2007. Advanced Jazz History will be an intensive six-week course of weekly 4-hour classes. Two weeks after the last class, there will be an optional final. Outstanding students will receive a certificate signed by Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis and Curator Phil Schaap.

Phil Schaap has broadcast jazz on the radio for over 37 years and has won three GRAMMY Awards for Historical Writing, three for Producing and two for Audio Engineering. Since 1970, Mr. Schaap has been heard on WKCR (89.9FM/wkcr.org) and currently his notable Charlie Parker program "Bird Flight" airs weekday mornings. Mr. Schaap is a jazz historian and became part of the staff of Jazz at Lincoln Center in 2001. In addition to teaching at The Juilliard School, he taught jazz at Princeton for 14 years and taught on the graduate level at Columbia University and Rutgers University. Mr. Schaap serves as the academic head of Swing University, the expanded education series offered by JALC. His knowledge of the history of the art of jazz enriches the organization across all departments. Mr. Schaap recently assumed the responsibility of directing The Gift Shop inside Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center that is filled with treasures in music, books and specialty items for jazz lovers around the world.
