| Wilbert de Joode in Cambridge, MA On Saturday, April 7th, the Boston-based concert series The Improvisation Pool will present the first of two Spring events featuring special guest artists from the world-renowned Amsterdam jazz and creative music scene. Curated by Dutch-born saxophonist Jorrit Dijkstra, who has lived in worked in Boston since 2002, these concerts will bring together a prominent Dutch performer with a group of Boston's most respected improvisers. Both this concert, and a second scheduled for May 17th featuring guitarist Wiek Hijmans, are made possible by a donation from the Gaudeamus Foundation. Bassist Wilbert de Joode, who kicks off his American solo bass tour with this performance, will perform in various settings with Dijkstra, keyboardist Ernst Karel, violinist Hillary Zipper, violist Tanya Kalmanovitch, theremin player James Coleman, and drummer Eric Rosenthal. The musicians will confront each other musically in a series of short duet, trioand quartet improvisations that will culminate in a grandfinale. De Joode will also be performing at The Lily Pad the night before as part of the Callithumpian Experiment Series. A self-taught musician, de Joode's experimental pizzicato and bowing techniques have made him one of the busiest and most recognizable players on the Dutch improvised music scene. A longtime member of the acclaimed Ab Baars Trio, he regularly performs with musicians such as Han Bennink, Michiel Braam and Michael Moore among many others. He has also collaborated with a long list of noted American improvisers including Charles Gayle, Steve Lacy, Sunny Murray, William Parker, and Roswell Rudd. On this American tour, de Joode will be performing music from his 2002 solo CD, Olo (Wig), which inspired The Wire's Bill Shoemaker to write, “Add Olo to the small but growing list of essential solo bass recordings.” write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Jazz News :: home page |
