| V.O.C.E. at Makor Arts Festival As part of MANifest at Makor, VOCE Sound Art frames works by New York artists that comment on the human experience in three cities: New York, New Orleans and the Biblical city of Jericho. The curated multimedia show will take place on Monday, March 12th. Claudia, a singing cyber spirit who occasionally visits vocal performance artist (aka) VOCE, will make her first live appearance outside of cyberspace in 'Jericho, ' a multimedia epic including explosive spoken word, free improvisation and provocative imagery created during the Makor Artist Network Residency Program. Featuring MAN musicians Gilad Ben-Zvi and Katie Down as well as poetry by playwright Pete Wolf Smith and NYFA Fellowship winner Beluvid Ola-Jendai, 'Jericho' marks the second piece to premiere at Makor as part of 'VOCE the Muse: An Exploratory Project.' Cain, the first in the series, premiered in 2006. Other presentations include live soundscapes by (aka) VOCE, Ana Liza Eufemio's film entitled 'Until the Noise Starts, ' a clip from Cuban filmmaker Michael Gongora's 'All the Wrong Faces, collaborative performances with winner of the Nicholas Roerich Poetry Prize Veronica Golos and multi-instrumentalist/producer Ethan Hein. VOCE's live, looped vocals redefine the solo by allowing one voice to accompany itself and instruments, building soundscapes that range from modern and ethereal to organic and bluesy. VOCE, which means "voice" in Italian (the language of Western musical tradition) was chosen to highlight the capacity of vocalists to project the artistry and skill attributed to instrumentalists. While earning a Bachelor of Arts at Amherst College VOCE benefited formal jazz and classical vocal training as well as courses in music, theatre & dance, African arts. Her professors included gospel pioneer and ethnomusicologist Dr. Horace Boyer ( University of Massachusetts ) and award-winning actress and playwright Dr. Andrea Hairston ( Smith College ). In New York City, she continued to sharpen her vocal skills by studying Bel canto under the late Phil Campanella (Singers Forum) and jazz performance with Barry Harris. She entered the experimental realm after being introduced to looping technology by enhanced voice guitar player Tor Snyder. Pieces from her album Cry Uncle: A VOCE Project have been performed at LaMaMa; the Discover Columbus festival in Manhattan, Morningside Park, Baggott Inn, Gallery RIVAA and The Artists Gallery. Film score credits include Cuban filmmaker Michael Gongoras 'All the Wrong Faces' and NYU student short 'Until the Noise Starts.' She has also made cameo appearances in 'La Reina's Barriolesque' a carnivale for the stage at Nuyorican Poets Cafe. She currently sings with Katie Down's Adelantre and produces curated performances and collaborations across media through VOCE the Muse: An Exploratory Project. Look for VOCE Projects to emerge as a branding agent signifying the world's cutting edge venues, including multi-media environments and emerging online societies. write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Jazz News :: home page |
