| "All Stars' Best Clips" The Jazz Journalists Association and New School Jazz present “All Stars' Best Clips” a Jazz Matters event featuring great and classic performance videos of Louis Armstrong, James Brown, Nat “King” Cole, Charlie Parker with Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Billie Holiday with Ben Webster, Lester Young, Trummy Young, Gerry Mulligan, Coleman Hawkins and Roy Eldridge, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Bobby McFerrin and many others, introduced by Howard Mandel from his personal collection Wednesday, March 14 at New School Jazz, NYC. ”Out of my own interests, and to be able to study performances with people who get more out of watching than just listening, I began to collect jazz videos when VHS first became popular, some 20 years ago,” says Mandel, president of the Jazz Journalists Association, a teacher at New York University, author of Future Jazz (Oxford U Press) and longtime contributor to National Public Radio, Down Beat, etc. “I've kept watch of releases, shopped carefully, and amassed a core video/dvd library of about 100 examples -- not extraordinarily large, but including many classic performances that aren't readily accessible, even on YouTube. Many people have heard these artists' names, but have never seen them do what they're famous for. This selection will be hit after hit, performing stars at rare peaks of their powers.” Jazz Matters panels are produced monthly during semesters at the New School Jazz fifth floor performance space, and by the JJA in accord with educational institutions, jazz festivals and conferences internationally.
