Seeking Middle School Musicians For Jazz At Lincoln Center

Jazz at Lincoln Center announced that it is seeking promising middle school instrumentalists from New York City to apply and audition for its third year of the Middle School Jazz Academy, a tuition-free intensive jazz instruction program held throughout the school year. The students meet twice weekly, October through May, for 45-minute private weekday lessons and enrichment activities in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center at Broadway at 60th Street.

Students learn to improvise, play in an ensemble and study the great figures in jazz history. In addition to private lessons and group classes, the students will have the opportunity to meet Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, as well as other members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. They will also develop mentor relationships with practicing jazz musicians and perform in two showcase concerts.

"The Middle School Jazz Academy welcomes middle school musicians into the creative and soulful world of jazz. Students make friends with each other and legendary jazz musicians. Within months, everybody is playing the blues, improvising on tunes and swinging as one voice." Eli Yamin, Director of MSJA.

ELIGIBILITY: - Students must be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade during the 2007-2008 school year. - Students must attend a school or live in one of New York City's five boroughs. - Preference given to students of families with limited means.
