Kirk Nurock Starting Two Courses

Kirk Nurock has lead vocal workshops for over 30 years. He arranged for Dizzy Gillespie, conducted live animals on the stage of Carnegie Hall, and won a scholarship at age 16 awarded by Duke Ellington. His Jazz songs have been sung by the likes of Theo Bleckmann, Janis Siegal, Jay Clayton, and Miles Griffith. Now he started two courses:

Vocal jazz - improv and interpretation. From jazz standards to neo-primitive chanting, this workshop presents tools and challenges for the contemporary singer. Open to all levels and stylistic backgrounds, the sessions include ensemble and solo singing, with fine piano accompaniment. Also: analysis of tunes & lyrics , an accessible method for scatting on changes, inventing with syllables and phonemes, your story versus the standards, and singing Kirk's works. If you've taken this workshop before, most of the actual material will be new &/or bring new perspective to past explorations.

Songwriting Seminar - jazz and related styles. In a fun and creative environment, this work will evolve from the writings of our participants. We'll explore poetic imagery, rhyme schemes, title, plot, “marriage” and “strophe.” We'll delve melodic contour, harmonic variety and rhythm grooves. Works by the great songwriters will be analyzed and we will learn how to make the most of our motivic ideas. Leadsheet notation will be taught as well as how/when to use a rhyming dictionary.
