After completing a 9 year worldwide tour with violinist Regina Carter ( one of the special guests featured on the album along with Carmen Lundy, Jon Lucien and David Budway ) Mayra felt the time was right to create a debut CD.

Born in Havana, Cuba and raised in Miami, Florida, Casales' earlier influences began with the Afro-Cuban musical culture of her surroundings. In Miami, Casales studied with Carlos "Potato" Valdez. Before long she was performing with some of the biggest names in Latin and Cuban music such as Celia Cruz, Machito, Joe Cuba, and Miguelito Valdez. In 1978, Casales moved to NYC where she continued her musical journey, playing with soulful vocalists Phyllis Hyman, Carmen Lundy, Jon Lucien and the Jazz Greats Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Barretto.

The list of legendary musicians Casales has shared the stage with and the styles of music she has mastered are exhausting, yet they seem only to fuel her passion. Casales has a fiery and heartfelt spirit which is present in her playing, Ms Casales' roots as a Cuban percussionist are strong and refreshing in Woman On Fire - Mujer Ardiente. Says Ms Casales, "This album is a tribute to all of the world music influences and artists that I have had the joy and honor of playing with."
