San Antonio Swing Reborn on Riverwalk Jazz

Riverwalk Jazz, the only ongoing broadcast series that documents the early history of jazz, comes to San Antonio's Carver Community Cultural Center for a concert re-creating the sounds of San Antonio swing and the Southwest "territory bands" of the 1930s. The show, presented live at The Carver's Jo Long Theatre on Saturday, February 24, 2007, will be broadcast on public radio stations across the U.S.

For this not-to-be-missed event, trumpet ace Jim Cullum has beefed up his San Antonio-based Jim Cullum Jazz Band, putting together a 12-piece jazz orchestra to honor the music of bandleader Don Albert and the territory bands established in San Antonio decades ago.

Concertgoers will revisit San Antonio's famed East Side clubs and hear the music once played by area swing bands. "Nobody's heard it for 70 years!" says Cullum. "You just can't believe how good it is."

David Holt, four-time Grammy Award-winning musician and host of Riverwalk Jazz, will be on hand to emcee the program. And Broadway veteran Vernel Bagneris -- who wrote, directed and starred in the Broadway production of One Mo' Time -- lends his talents to bring this fascinating period of music history to life.

Cullum doesn't mince words when it comes to this show. "It promises to be one of the greatest nights in our group's 44-year history", he says. "The band is turned on and they're breathing fire!"

Currently in its 18th season, public radio's Riverwalk Jazz celebrates classic jazz, educates America on the value of its musical heritage, and entertains legions of listeners in the bargain. The program, which originates from San Antonio's River Walk, is the city's own ambassador of culture and goodwill.

Riverwalk Jazz is distributed by PRI, Public Radio International, to more than 150 public radio stations nationwide and heard around the world via the Internet and XM Satellite Radio. In San Antonio and the surrounding area, fans tune to KSTX 89.1 FM, KTXI 90.1 FM and KRTU-FM 91.7. The show is produced by the award-winning PVPMedia team and Jim Cullum.
