Jazz Appreciation Month In April

Jazz at Lincoln Center swings into national Jazz Appreciation Month in April with something for everyone at Frederick P. Rose Hall, Broadway and 60th Street in New York City.

In concert: April 10, 2006, Rose Theater - Double bill: Dr. John and The Lower 911 & The Wynton Marsalis Quintet. Now that's HIP Concert sponsored by HIP Health Plan of New York

April 13 & 14, 2007,Rose Theater: Todo Tango: Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra with Arturo O'Farrill. Grammy award-winning composer, bassist and arranger Pablo Aslan explores the rich tapestry of the tango experience and its fusion in jazz culture.

April 20 & 21, 2007, The Allen Room: Singers Over Manhattan: Dianne Reeves. The world-class Grammy award-winning vocalist Dianne Reeves and her trio return to Jazz at Lincoln Center as a part of the Singers Over Manhattan series.

April 26, 27 & 28, 2007, Rose Theater: The Legends of Blue Note: Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will perform big band arrangements of Blue Note Records greatest hits including "Song for My Father", "Blue Bossa" and "This I Dig of You" while celebrating music from one of the most fabled labels in jazz.

April 24-29 - Samba Jazz & Music of Jobim featuring Helio Alves, Duduka Da Fonsecca, Eddie Gomez, Claudio Roditi, Paulo Jobim & Maucha Adnet. April 26 - Giacomo Gates & Friends. April 30 - Temple University Jazz Band featuring Slide Hampton & Terrell Stafford.

In The Classroom: Swing University: Advanced Jazz History with Phil Schaap, 6-week session, Tuesdays, April 3-May 8, 2007. Advanced Jazz History will be an intensive six-week course of weekly 4-hour classes. Two weeks after the last class, there will be an optional final. Outstanding students will receive a certificate signed by Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis and Curator Phil Schaap.

Duke Ellington with Phil Schaap, 8-week sessions, Wednesdays, April 4-May 23, 2007. Duke Ellington expanded the boundaries of jazz with a musical and cultural influence that still stands today. From his early years to the end of his life, immerse yourself in the music and legacy of "The Maestro" with Phil Schaap.

WeBop!: For children ages 8 months to 5 years old, 8-week session, Tuesdays, April 17-June 12, 2007, Saturdays, April 14-June 9, 2007.

Benefit Event: April 15, 2006, Blue Smoke Jazz Standard, Annual Spring Family Benefit: Big Band Boogie. Featuring members of the Middle School Jazz Academy, JALC presents a remarkable event for families to share and experience jazz together. Proceeds support the hundreds of education events produced annually by Jazz at Lincoln Center. The event will be co-chaired by Amy Phelan, Ani and Mark Gabrellian, Donna Astion and Mike Fricklas.

On Jazz At Lincoln Center Radio: April 5, 2007 - Stand-Up For Jazz - Punch lines meet brass lines: comedian Bill Cosby quips with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for a night of stories, humor, and music. Hear Cosby's tales of jazz legends Ray Charles and Frank Foster and his duets with the orchestra on "Green Chimneys", "Open the Door, Richard", and "Salt Peanuts." Drum roll please!

April 12, 2007 - Great Latin Jazz Vocalists - Songstress Claudia Acuna and Sonero Herman Olivera remember the great Latin singers Tito Rodriguez and Celia Cruz with Arturo O'Farrill and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. Selections include "Buscando La Melodia", "Somos Novios", and "Estoy Como Nunca."

April 19, 2007 - Motor City Jazz -Start your engines! A Motor City juggernaut - Ron Carter, Geri Allen, Marcus Belgrave, Curtis Fuller, Charles McPherson, Ali Jackson, and Yusef Lateef - drives the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra on a soundtrack from Detroit to New York. Scenic moments include Carter's flamenco tinged "Sheila's Song", Barry Harris' bouncing "Minor Situation", and Lateef's epic suite "Morning Trilogy."

April 26, 2007 - The Music Of Paul Whiteman -The hugely popular big band leader of the 20's, Paul Whiteman, crowned himself the "King of Jazz." He hired the best musicians to work for him - George Gershwin, Don Redman, and Duke Ellington. Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra showcase classic Redman arrangements such as "Stampede" and "I'd Love It." Special guests include Bob Wilbur, Daryl Sherman, and Vince Giordano.
