’Tenors of Our Time’ Concert, Featuring Dino Govoni

Saxophonist Dino Govoni and his quartet will play a special tribute to the modern jazz giants of the tenor sax, on Thursday night, February 22, 2007, at the Wamsutta Club, 427 County Street in downtown New Bedford, MA. The concert is presented by Whaling City Sound. Performers on the tenor saxophone have played a key role in the development of jazz from the late 1950s onward, with John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and others changing not only how their instruments are played, but also widening the view of what music IS - harmonically and rhythmically.

Dino Govoni, Assistant Professor of Woodwinds at Berklee College of Music, is a master not only of his instruments, but also in sharing his energy and explorations with his audience. Surrounded by a remarkable cast of equally open-minded and accomplished musicians, Dino will give his impressions of what several modern players have meant to him, and to Jazz music.

Band mates Brad Hatfield on keyboards, Dave Zinno on acoustic bass and Chris Poudrier on drums will be supporting Dino as he samples and interprets songs associated with, or written by, the aforementioned Coltrane & Rollins, Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Dexter Gordon and others. The laid back comfort of the historic Wamsutta Club will be a perfect backdrop for this music.

In commenting on Dino's first Whaling City Sound CD, Breakin' Out, the late Michael Brecker said, "An inspiring voice on the saxophone, Dino has the ability to combine natural feeling and innovative ideas with flawless execution."
