| Ran Blake's New Release The New York City based Tompkins Square label proudly announces the release of The Complete All That Is Tied Sessions in the wake of many year-end honors for acclaimed pianist and composer Ran Blake. The entire twenty-five song session, of which thirteen are previously unreleased, will be made available online exclusively via eMusic.com starting February 1, 2007. Year-end honors for Blake's album All That Is Tied include a 'Top 50 albums of 2006' pick in WIRE Magazine, a #4 Album of the Year slot on the Cadence Jazz Poll, #8 in Jazz Review UK, #2 on W. Kim Heron's list in the Detroit Metro Times, and a year- end mention in DownBeat, which gave the album 4 stars upon release. In the new Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings issued in November, the album receives a crown with a four star review, calling All That Is Tied "a quiet masterpiece" and "a magnificent record from a neglected American master." All That Is Tied a solo piano journey which finds Blake revisiting compositions from his entire 40+ year career, received wide praise upon release on Tompkins Square in March 2006, and was immediately hailed by respected critic Brian Morton as "the most beautiful and challenging piano record of the last 25 years", and "a masterpiece." Ran's former student at New England Conservatory, John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood), contributed liner notes for the package. Highlights of The Complete All That Is Tied Sessions include alternate takes of tunes from the album, some radically different, as well as new recordings of "Vanguard" and "Straight Ahead, " which both appeared on Blake's classic 1961 album with Jeanne Lee, The Newest Sound Around; "Indian Winter" from 1983's Suffield Gothic; and "Spiral Staircase" from his 2001 album Sonic Temples. write your comments about the article :: © 2007 Jazz News :: home page |
