| Carnegie Hall Presents the Geri Allen Trio  Carnegie Hall presents the Geri Allen Trio--with pianist Geri Allen, double bassist Darryl Hall, and drummer Jimmy Cobb--in Zankel Hall on Wednesday, February 28. The trio performs selections from Timeless Portraits and Dreams, Ms. Allen's 2006 critically-acclaimed release on the Telarc label. Timeless Portraits and Dreams--an amalgam of original compositions, jazz standards, and spirituals--is Ms. Allen's acknowledgement of the artistic, historical, and even spiritual connections that have made jazz the powerful cultural force it has become during the past century. This concert is presented in partnership with Festival Productions, Inc. as part of Carnegie Hall's The Shape of Jazz series.Geri Allen is an internationally known award-winning composer and pianist. Since 1982, she has recorded and performed with musicians as diverse as Charles Lloyd (with whom she has toured for several years), Sir Simon Rattle, Vernon Reid, Ron Carter, Mary Wilson and the Supremes, Tony Williams, Charlie Haden, Marianne Faithful, and Wayne Shorter, among many others. In addition to her extensive collaborative recording discography, Ms. Allen has released a number of recordings under her own name, including The Nurturer, Twenty One, Maroons, The Gathering and most recently, the critically acclaimed Timeless Portraits and Dreams. After graduating from Detroit's famous magnet music school, Cass Technical High School, Ms. Allen went on to attend Howard University, where she later served as assistant Professor of Music. During that period the University honored her with both the Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Professor Awards. Ms. Allen is currently Associate Professor of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation at the University of Michigan. Ms. Allen's work as a composer has garnered numerous awards as well as commissions from organizations such as Lincoln Center, Music Theatre Group, American Music Theatre Festival, and Stanford University.
