Michelle Walker at Smoke

Jazz vocalist Michelle Walker, a recent transplant from Washington, DC to New York City, will perform in concert at Smoke Jazz Club, New York on Sunday January 21, 2007. Over the last few years, Michelle has begun to amass an impressive musical resume of concert and festival performances, including The Lincoln Center-Women in Jazz Festival, The Silver Spring Jazz Festival, Goshen Jazz Festival and The Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival. She has also opened in concert for legendary jazz vocalist Mark Murphy, Wynton Marsalis and Rene Marie.

Often compared to Cassandra Wilson, Nina Simone and Betty Carter in style and tone, Michelle has been critically acclaimed for her arrangements, rhythmic expressiveness and rich vocal quality. Her arrangements of straight-ahead standards and contemporary pop tunes blend genres effortlessly and with a undeniable level of originality that is solidifying her own distinctive sound. Dave Nathan at AllAboutJazz.com says, "Walker demonstrates an extraordinary degree of musicality."

The essence of SMOKE is great live music in someone's living room. It's like a house party with the best jazz musicians alive today, hanging out and doing what they love, jamming. Early Sunday evenings are no different as they come alive with featured jazz vocalists. Joining Michelle will be: Daniela Schaechter ~ Piano; Oleg Osenkov ~ Bass; Quincy Davis ~ Drums.
