| 34th Annual IAJE Conference THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR JAZZ EDUCATION 34TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE TAKES MANHATTAN FROM JANUARY 10-13, 2007 From Wednesday, January 10 through Saturday, January 13, 2007 The International Association for Jazz Education 34th Annual Conference (Hilton New York Hotel and Sheraton New York Hotel) will feature a 75, 000 square-foot music industry exposition, commission premieres, technology presentations, award ceremonies, and performances by over 500 of the world's most respected professional jazz groups and musicians. In addition, performances by top school groups from France, Denmark, Australia, United Kingdom, Israel, Kazakhstan, Canada, and the United States. The 2007 IAJE Industry Track, presented under the auspices of Jazz Alliance International, is geared to members of the jazz recording, journalism, presenting, performing, retail, and radio industry. These panel sessions will focus on career development, new media, the recording industry, and personalized consultation. This year, the conference will focus on jazz from France, a country whose connection to jazz is well documented throughout the 20th century. Presented in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States, CulturesFrance, the French Ministry of Culture, SACEM, and the Paris Conservatory of Music, a series of performances and presentations along with a French fte marketplace in the conference exposition hall. French Ambassador to the United States Jean David Levitte and composer Michel Legrand will host an evening of French jazz on Saturday, January 13 in the Hilton Grand Ballroom. During the concert, special recognition will be given to the French government for their response to the New Orleans Musician Community following Hurricane Katrina. IAJE 2007 Conference Highlights include: Wednesday, January 10 - 7th Annual IAJE Gala Dinner, benefiting the IAJE Campaign for Jazz, a landmark $12 million dollar initiative, which will provide a permanent funding base for IAJE's education programs and support for the advocacy initiatives of IAJE subsidiary Jazz Alliance International (JAI). Hosted by NEA Jazz Master and GRAMMY Award winning vocalist Nancy Wilson, the 2007 IAJE President's Award will be presented to epic French composer Michel Legrand and the Lawrence Berk Leadership Award to past IAJE President David Baker. Opening night concert featuring Joey DeFrancesco Orchestra with special guest Ron Blake, the Latin Giants Of Jazz, and The Music School's Crescent Super Band featuring special guest Doc Severinsen. Thursday, January 11 - Conference Opening General Session, with welcoming remarks from IAJE President Chuck Owen and IAJE Executive Director Bill McFarlin, and the premiere of performances for IAJE/ASCAP Commissions honoring Billy Strayhorn by composers Oscar Perez and Rufus Reid, and the 2006 Gil Evans Commission by composer Sherisse Rogers. JazzTimes presents Producing Miles Davis, a panel featuring producers from nearly every era of Davis' long and storied career--George Avakian, Bob Belden, George Duke, Teo Macero, and Marcus Miller--moderated by Al Pryor to discuss working in the studio with the legendary "Prince of Darkness." NEA Jazz Masters panel, an informal discussion with the seven 2007 NEA Jazz Masters Toshiko Akiyoshi, Curtis Fuller, Dan Morgenstern, Ramsey Lewis, Jimmy Scott, Frank Wess, and Phil Woods, moderated by A.B. Saturday, January 13 - Old Friends: A Conversation with author and NEA Jazz Master Nat Hentoff and legendary alto saxophonist and 2007 NEA Jazz Master Phil Woods, a consummate musician, composer, leader, and sideman with the bands of Charlie Barnet, Buddy Rich, Quincy Jones, and Benny Goodman among many others. Sheraton New York Ballroom West. Blindfold Test presented annually by Downbeat, is a live version of the magazine's most popular column, the "Blindfold Test." This year, bassist/composer Ron Carter will sit in the hot seat for the listening test that will challenge him to identify and discuss the music and musicians from selected recordings, moderated by Dan Ouellette. The multiple GRAMMY Award-winning Latin jazz pianist and composer, Eddie Palmieri will be interviewed by noted author, musician, musicologist, and authority on Cuban music Ned Sublette.
