| Berkovitz, Mann and Samenfeld in Cambridge, MA A Night of Jazz with Joe Berkovitz, David Mann, and Scott Samenfeld at the Friends Meeting House in Cambridge, MA will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2007. The trio will feature original compositions from Joe Berkovitz and Scott Samenfeld along with a few choice jazz standards. Joe Berkovitz is a Boston-based pianist and composer with a style spanning many genres, from jazz to medieval music to funk. He attended New England Conservatory, where he studied with Jaki Byard, Ran Blake and George Russell among others. He has performed live with award-winning clarinetist Don Byron, and appears on Byron's Elektra/Nonesuch recording The Tuskegee Experiments. Bassist Scott Samenfeld has performed and taught around Boston since 1970 when he attended Berklee. He was a member of Razzamatazz, an original music group that mixed jazz, folk, rock and other musical influences, and Trilliam, an avant-guard jazz trio. A number of performances of poetry and spoken work set to jazz improvization in the early 1990's gave rise to his group Muse Stew. Eventully it focused more on his original compositions and continues to perform around Boston. Muse Stew has two CDs, Crossings (1996), and Live at the Zeitgeist Gallery (2004). David Mann never studied music formally, but has played drums most of his life because he can't help it. He performed and recorded with numerous rock and fusion groups in the early 1970's, but laid this aside in favor of academic pursuits until random coincidence threw him together with Scott and Joe.
