Joaquín Cortés 2007 UK Tour

Joaquín Cortés will tour UK from Monday, May 28th 2007 (London) to Saturday, June 2nd 2007 (Cardiff). Tickets on sale Monday 18th December.
Ten years ago he took the UK by storm with Gypsy Passion. Since then he has danced around the world and been admired by a diversity of artists including J-Lo, Sting, Armani and many others. Now after a two year absence from the UK, Joaquín Cortés, the Spanish flamenco dancing sensation is back with a fabulous new reworking of his show 'Mi Soledad' (My Solitude) at the Royal Albert Hall, Manchester MEN, Cardiff CIA and Birmingham NIA.

This new version of 'Mi Soledad' premieres on Broadway (New York City) in December 2006. In 'Mi Soledad' (My Solitude), Joaquín offers us an expression of his deepest feelings. With the subtitle "Solea" showing the artistic direction of this new show, this is an intimate journey. The main emotion is that of loneliness but one that is understood and charged with intimacy.

Through the vehicles of the music and of his unmistakable trademark "zapateado", Cortés takes us straight to the soul of his art, using a rich palette full of the colours of flamenco.

The mood swings from the melancholy, where the mind drifts between sleep and consciousness, and where all outside influences have disappeared to a place where the inner being seeks new worlds and fantasies where we are strong and invincible.

The stage set is deliberately minimalist and eschews artifice where the mood is set by superb musicians that have worked with Joaquín over the course of his career. Now Cortés looks to raise the standard even further and the new numbers go to the very root of the dancer's art, to the place where the dance and the music talk to each other. The improvisation flows and the stage is bare so that each step becomes something unique and unrepeatable.

The costumes have been designed specially for this show by Jean Paul Gaultier, keeping as usual his simple and elegant style, with basic colours such as black, white and dark red – colours of blood and wine and colours that keep in touch with the harmony of the show.

Most recently Joaquín has been seen throughout Europe and South America in a major advertising campaign for Samsonite.

Cortés has also been invited to perform in the European parliament as a representative of the gypsy culture and to recognise the need for integration through education and culture of the new Roma population of Europe which will exceed 8 million people in 2007. The creation of events and educational projects is an important means for Cortés to take forward the work of the Fundacción Passion Gitana.
