Venues Today Ranks Top Concert Facilities

Venues Today magazine has announced its "2006 Top Stops", ranking the highest grossing entertainment facilities around the globe. Madison Square Garden in New York continues to dominate the charts in the 15, 001-30, 000 seating capacity category, bringing in $106 million with 108 concerts and events reported.

Venues Today Top Stops are ranked based on seating capacity, total gross revenues, total number of concerts and events and total attendance. Venues Today divides the rankings into six separate seating capacity ranges. For each group, 20 venues are ranked.

Here's a breakdown of how other venues faired in the rankings: — Following Madison Square Garden in its category was the Wachovia Complex in Philadelphia, booking 123 concerts and events at its Wachovia Center and Wachovia Spectrum worth a combined $62 million. Madonna contributed greatly to that ranking, grossing $4.7 million for two concerts in July. The Staples Center in Los Angeles took third place in the category, reporting $48.9 million for 73 shows.

— The Atlantic City (N.J.) Boardwalk Hall was the biggest winner in the 10, 000 to 15, 000 capacity venues, grossing $26.3 million from an annual attendance of 281, 230. The Boardwalk was followed by the Brisbane (Australia) Entertainment Centre, then the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, N.Y. and the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.

— The House of Blues continues to dominate the club category for venues of 2, 000 seats or less, grabbing six spots in the category's Top Ten. Those six in the 10-club chain, which was purchased by Live Nation in July — grossed $25.7 million for the period.

"Arenas and theaters contributed significantly to the economic impact and quality of life in the cities they serve in 2006", said Linda Deckard, publisher of Venues Today. "It was a turnaround year for many, despite heightened competition in the entertainment environment. People still like to see it live."

Venues Today publishes a monthly Top Stops report in its magazine, and a weekly and monthly Hot Tickets report, listing the top-grossing individual concerts and shows. The year-end reports for both categories are now available in the December 2006 issue.
